What is The Stanford Shakespeare Society?
The Society: The Stanford Shakespeare Society is a student run repertory theater troupe at Stanford University. A single ensemble works together throughout the year to learn, produce, act, design, direct and run a season of Shakespeare's plays. Modeled after such troupes as the Oregon Shakespeare Festival and the Royal Shakespeare Company, the Society offers members the unique opportunity on a collegiate campus to work with a single group of people throughout the year on a multiple show season.
Membership: Returning members are guaranteed a spot the following year. Auditions for new members are held at the beginning of each academic year.
Learning:Utilizing the resources of Stanford University, we spend the fall quarter training in Shakespearean performance style and technique, culminating in a short workshop production.
Productions: The Society produces two Mainstage Productions each year, an indoor Winter quarter production and an outdoor one Spring quarter. We strive to produce imaginative and relevant interpretations of Shakespeare's works and aim for professionalism and quality in our shows. Staging many of our shows in "non-traditional" spaces (i.e. the Cantor Arts Center or the Old Union Courtyard), our productions are FREE and open to anyone.
Free?!: Yup! Our productions are completely free. Our mission is to bring free theater and Shakespeare to Stanford. We are funded by the generous support of the undergraduate student body in the form of ASSU Special Fees.Of course, season sponsors and donors are always useful. If you are interested, please contact us! We expect our productions this year to reach over 3,500 people.
